Anxiety is defined by the inability to control our thoughts and worries. Anxiety can be caused by dysregulation of the nervous system or  the brains inability to control nervousness.  Strategies that can assist with anxiety include: Mindfulness, Somatic Therapy, Hakomi, CBT, and EMDR approaches.

Holistic counselling is an approach to treatment that focuses on the entire human being and their life experience as a means to assess and treat a one's symptoms.

EMDR 

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) encourages clients to focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (eye movements), which is associated with reduction of stressing emotions and memories. It allows for processing of difficult memories and emotions. 

Family Therapy

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Individual therapy involves a counsellor working one-on-one with individuals to address area of concern. The counsellor and client work together to establish goals that emphasize a path of growth and healing.

REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT COUNSELLING

Counselling that focuses on the needs of refugees and immigrants. Counselling provides psycho-education, advocacy, connection to resources and trauma informed techniques. Rise Above acknowledges that culture and connection may play a significant role in ones healing.

GROUP THERAPY

TRAUMA INFORMED COUNSELLING

Rise Above specializes in trauma-informed care. There are many reasons that trauma hurts us and causes post-traumatic stress. Research has shown that trauma has the ability to physically change our brains. Areas of your brain that once worked in a particular way change based on hyperarousal due to trauma.

SPIRITUAL COUNSELLING

Spiritual counselling is the connection between mind, body and spirit. It is a type of counselling that focuses on a person's spiritual side in the way that they choose to express it and may help to explore and solidify one's beliefs.

BIPOC COUNSELLING

Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) counselling focuses on the impacts of oppression, racism and societal oppression. Counsellors understand transgenerational trauma and healing that focuses on decolonization.

Counsellors certified in child therapy focus on processing through play which involves creating a safe and positive environment where children can work on processing and healing.

Parent-Child Reunification

Parent-child relationships may strengthen when there is a focus on healing attachments and reunification strategies. The goal is to foster trust, kindness, acceptance and forgiveness.

Somatic Therapy is trauma informed therapy that is body-centered and uses both psychotherapy and physical therapies for holistic healing. Somatic helps heal the nervous system to create regulation when trauma creates dysregulation of the body and brain.

Couples and family therapy focuses on creating a safe space for expression and healing to encourage a  better understanding and acknowledgement of each individual.

DEPRESSION

Depression involves feelings of severe sadness and hopelessness.  At times, depression can be environmental or biological depending on the person and the situation. Depression can be long lasting and overwhelming. Techniques that work well with depression include CBT, Mindfulness and EMDR approaches.

Mindfulness builds on the principles of being fully present with oneself. Using mindfulness techniques allow for grounding 

and resourcing through the power of now. It teaches one to be connected to thoughts emotions and behaviors without judgment.

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS (PTS)

PTS is defined as uncontrollable 

intrusive thoughts, memories and emotions.  Therapy has to reflect the WHOLE person. This can done using body focused therapies such as, Somatic Therapy, EMDR and Hakomi Approaches.
